Summer is coming! It is a wonderful season to head to the park, plant a garden, and relax in the sun. But all of those things require a lot of water in order to maintain them. And that’s why it is a good idea to think about helping the environment and our resources and your wallet by saving water. There are a gazillion ways you can save water and every little bit is helpful.
We all know that grass grows a lot more in the warm sun. It also requires more water. But if you leave your grass a little bit longer, it will be better protected, will look more healthy and also will need less watering. When you are out there on your awesome zero turn riding mowers, just leave the grass a little long. That’s just one simple step to saving water this summer.
You can also water when it is coolest outside. This will keep the water from evaporating. Instead it will go right where you need it most. So many people set their sprinklers for the morning. While that may be better than the middle of the day it isn’t the wisest time to water. In order to use less water, set your sprinklers to come on when the sun rises. This will ensure that the water does its best work and all goes where it is needed.
Another simple thing you can do is to collect your rain water from your gutters. Now you can invest in beautiful systems to help you accomplish this or you can basically set up some buckets and catch it yourself. It isn’t as attractive that way, but you’ll feel good knowing that you are recycling water that otherwise would be wasted.
And believe it or not these few steps can and will save you money. It may be only a few dollars each month but it does make a huge difference. And think of all the money your community could save if everyone was educated and chose to change even one thing about how they use water this summer.
This summer enjoy your yard, plant your seeds, and head to the park. But think about ways your family and your community can help our earth better use the water we use. Water is a precious asset. It shouldn’t be wasted and it is our responsibility to model and take care of what we have been given. It will better our world, it will allow you to still enjoy a flourishing garden and green grass as well. And it will even help you save some money. It’s easy to do and worth the effort.

Adaptive sports are great – they open up sports to people who wouldn’t normally be able to participate in them due to mental or physical disabilities. Typically, access to various sports is limited to people in peak physical fitness, but with adaptive sports, anyone can join in.

Being able to take part in sports – especially team sports – has been proven to improve a person’s mental and physical fitness, as well as benefit their social skills and their ability to handle their emotions.

That people with disabilities finally have some more options to get out and get involved can only be a great thing.

History of Adaptive Sports

Sports designed to allow those people with physical limitations or disabilities first began to emerge following the conclusion of the Second World War, which makes a lot of sense – many hundreds of soldiers who were fighting on the frontlines came home injured and needed intensive rehabilitation.

These sports were designed to help the patients with their physical and mental recovery, but they soon moved beyond mere rehabilitation, quickly being taken up as hobbies by the patients after finishing treatment, then being enjoyed so much that they started being played competitively.

What we now know as the Paralympic Games can trace its roots back to this rehabilitation stage – it was originally held at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury for British soldiers who had injuries in their spinal cords. 1988 saw the first official “Paralympic” games in Seoul, but they’ve been held in Stoke Mandeville a few times since their inception.

The Games have taken off to the point where, at last year’s London Summer Olympics, we finally saw them being treated as equal to the traditional Olympic games, and the excitement and competition was seen by everyone as being every bit as good.

We are still striving toward full inclusion – something which started in the ‘80s – but this has yet to be fully realised. However, things are definitely improving: the US Department of Education has recently mandated that all schools must offer equal sporting opportunities to disabled pupils, including varsity sports. It’s a big step, but we must keep walking forward.

What Sorts of Adaptive Sports Are Available?

All sorts of them are out there for you! If you want to ski (or, if you’re more daring, water ski) you can simply use a sit-ski, or for bowlers there are always the bowling ramps which you can use.

You must have seen plenty of specialised equipment being used in the Paralympic Games – from Oscar Pistorius’s incredible prosthetic legs (giving him the nickname “Blade Runner”) to the hand-bikes and other types bikes, allowing people of all ability levels to take part in cycling.

Weight lifters can use special gloves, and you have surely seen the specially designed wheelchairs which are used in basketball and “murderball” – wheelchair rugby. There are plenty of options out there now, and they’re all available for you to find: you just have to look!

In America, many people take for granted the many basic rights that they have. For instance, the mere fact that here in America you’re innocent until proven guilty seems completely backwards for many other cultures and governments throughout the world. One criminal defense lawyer in Los Angeles wants you realize why the world needs criminal defense lawyers.

With today’s complex legal system it’s important to have a professional who has dedicated their lives to learning, understanding, and challenging the extensive legal processes of our nation. For some alleged criminals, simply understanding what exact crime they’ve committed is key. There are many factors that go into the legal process; what was motive? What was the mindset of the alleged criminal? What crime/s, if any, were committed?

Because so much goes into the defense of an individual in the legal system it’s important to ensure that they’re properly represented. Some alleged criminals sit in the judgment seat and don’t even know what their charges mean or what type of sentencing they may face. Because of the complexity of the legal system and the varying types of individuals that are seen going through the process a specific standard must be set for representation and this is why criminal defense lawyers are an absolute must.

The dentist can be one of the scariest experiences for grown people, so for children the experience can be even worse. However if a parent prepares his or her child for what going to the Orem dentist entails, then it can be a lot easier on them as well as on you.

Find a Professional They’re Comfortable With

When it comes to kids, it’s important to have a professional that can put them at ease. As such it’s important to find a dentist that can clean their teeth, but who can also come down to their level and make even the youngest patients feel comfortable. If a child reacts well to a dentist, and if that dentist explains what is going to happen and what it’s going to feel like, then children are going to be significantly more comfortable and relaxed during a given dental procedure.

Don’t Wind Yourself Up

Children are very sensitive to the emotional vibrations put off by their parents. If parents are nervous and worried, then children will also be nervous and worried. The best approach is to be open and honest with what a child can expect from the dentist so that both of you can relax.

Let Them See What Happens

Nothing strips the uncertainty and mystery away from a dental procedure like seeing it actually done to someone else. If a parent is going to have his or her teeth cleaned, then bringing a child along and letting him or her watch can make the experience that much simpler. Once a child sees that getting their teeth cleaned isn’t going to hurt, and that at worst it will be a little bit uncomfortable, it becomes a much less stressful prospect for them.

Read Children’s Dental Stories

There are a wide range of children’s books out there featuring diverse characters like Dora the Explorer, Arthur and others all dealing with dental imagery. Reading these stories to children can give them a positive image of what going to the dentist is going to be like, and how it will help them maintain a healthy, beautiful smile.

Bribe Them

When all else fails, promising a child some reward for getting through the experience while keeping a stiff upper lip can be a great motivator. It could be something as simple as taking them to the movies, but if a child has something to look forward to then they’ll have something to focus on when the dental visit seems boring or uncomfortable to them. Sometimes that extra little motivation is all that a child needs.

Do you have a child that has shown some interest in a musical instrument? Are they interested in piano, or drums? Perhaps they are interested in a band instrument. While not every child will grow up to be the next Mozart or Brahms, parents should know that there are some very unconventional benefits that can be gained just from the act of learning to play music. Of course it is always great to learn more about music and how it is created, check out these other benefits that you may have never considered using Music Production Training.

1. Discipline
Learning to sing or play a musical instrument is a very in depth process. This process begins with several fundamentals. Many people don’t realize that children can learn to read music even before they learn to read. The process is very similar and learning to read becomes much simpler if a child has already learned to read music. The fundamentals don’t stop there. Reading is just part of knowing what to play. Musicians also have to learn how to play. All combined, a true beginner may spend two to three years getting to a point that the average person would say they are playing music. This only happens with discipline and regular practice.

2. Motor Skills and Coordination

It’s not uncommon to have highly developed fine motor skills in children who have studied music. It takes dexterity to learn to find piano keys or guitar frets by feel and to control drum sticks or manipulate the keys of a clarinet. Even in singers, the ability to control fine movements in the throat and sinus area adds to the ability to control small movements. Children who have studied music early in life tend to have better handwriting and several other skills that are a product of their improved dexterity.

3. Memory

There is an extremely academic process to learning to play music. The process alone builds mental capacity and can help with memory. There is more than just the process that helps with memory. Do you remember learning songs in school to memorize tables, state capitals, or countries of the world? There is a reason these things are set to music. Using music as a memorization tool drastically improves retention. You may not even remember the name of the teacher that taught you the ABC song, but I guarantee you still know it. If you are like some, you probably still sing it while you are putting things in alphabetical order. Even beyond memorization songs, the process of learning music improves all memory exponentially.

4. Pattern Identification

If you aren’t a musician, you may have never noticed the patterns in music. Even the simplest pop songs have verses, a chorus, and a bridge. These are organized patterns that are grouped in rhythmic synchronicity. You may not know the chord changes, but you can hear when it is time for the chorus. Classical music, while more complicated, revolves around similar patterns. Learning these patterns early in life helps children to recognize more complicated patterns later in life. Pattern recognition is one of the highest components of intelligence.

5. Social Skills

Most musicians have the opportunity to play in some sort of ensemble. This alone helps to build social skills. It is a team atmosphere and works very similarly to sports. Added to this effect are the elements of music and harmony. Playing in an ensemble, or even alone, musicians learn the importance of give and take. They learn how one part will have precedence and then how it is handed off to another point. There is an art to social skills, and that art can be studied when studying music.

Tennis has so many benefits as a sport: increased mental faculties, better cardiovascular health, stronger muscles, stronger bones, and the subject of this piece – weight loss. Developing lean muscle and lowering body fat is the name of the game, and you can achieve this goal with a tennis racquet. To optimise weight loss on the courts, follow these handy tips:

Set Reasonable Goals

You may want to consult a medical professional or dietician before you start playing tennis. With their advice, you can construct a healthy, gradual weight loss regime, that’s tailored to your specific needs. Make realistic goals to keep motivated and pay attention to the doctor’s advice.

Your Diet

One to two pounds a week is a reasonable amount of weight to lose. Don’t start starving yourself; eat a nutritious and healthy diet. Your body will need this energy to power your workouts and heal your muscles afterwards.

Try incorporating larger quantities of fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, and pulses into your diet. Don’t shy away from complex carbohydrates, as these are important for exercise.

How Many Calories Will You Burn?

An hour game of competitive tennis will be quite an intensive workout. According to MayoClinic, a 160 pound person will burn almost 600 calories! The trick is not to stand around. When you’re waiting for your tennis partner to go retrieve the ball, march on the spot or jog up and down to keep your blood pumping.

Keep Motivated

It takes two to tennis. By playing with someone else who can advise you on improving your game, you’ll stay more focused and lose weight more effectively. The social side is a great motivating factor for many people who are exercise-shy.

Finding an equal match will mean that you both exercise more. If you’re clearly better than your opponent, you’re unlikely to get the workout you need. Keep it competitive and intense.

Don’t expect to see results overnight. When you start exercising properly, you’re in it for the long-haul. Although you will see changes over the months, it can take half a year (or more) sometimes to achieve the fitness level you’re hoping for. Just stick to your exercise schedule and don’t get disheartened.

Conditioning

To burn extra calories, incorporate strength training into your weekly exercise regime. Building up lean muscle will help you perform better during your tennis matches – this means weight training, martial arts, or swimming. As fantastic as tennis is for your health, you should have a variety of sports and activities up your sleeve.

Get Instruction

Even if you just contact a tennis instructor for a one-off lesson, you should consider brushing up your technique to avoid injury and improve your skills. Besides, the coach is bound to put you through your paces. Often, beginners find the learning curve of tennis quite steep, but with professional tutelage, you’ll get through the worst of it and be able to focus on your weight loss goals.

Staying warm in the winter …

If you live in a big old brick house in the upper Midwest call Heating Contractors Minnetonka, winter can be challenging. But there’s a trick or two that will let you stay cozy warm.

Staying warm in the winter actually starts in the fall, when you should have a reliable company come and service your furnace. Dirt can get into the three main components of the furnace, the heat source, the fan and the thermostat. The serviceman should change the furnace filter and make sure all the components are working. You don’t want the furnace going out during the Christmas Eve blizzard when 45 people are coming tomorrow for dinner.

Another step you can take is to add insulation to your attic. Heat travels up, so you want to stop it from going out through your roof. If you have 3-4 inches of insulation already, and you live in a cold region, you should add a layer of R38 to R49 insulation. The R is a measure of insulation’s ability to contain heat, and R38 and R49 have a lot of insulating capacity.

If your old windows sound like a drum solo when the wind hits them, you can also consider replacing them before winter. It’ll make a big difference in drafts and heating bills, and you can get a tax credit for it. The tax credit is 10% of the window cost, not including installation.

Sooner or later the wintry blast will come, and even if you have new windows you may want to cover them some more. You can get window insulation kits that include two-sided tape and shrink film. Just tape the film to the window and blow your hair dryer on it until it shrinks into place. You can also cover patio doors that you don’t use in the winter. The film blocks a lot of drafts, and generally you can see out the windows very well through it.

Another option for covering windows is insulating curtains. Insulating curtains have a high-density foam that blocks heat and a reflective film that send heat back into the room. They also have a vapor barrier to keep the nasty damp air from coming into the house. They’re an easy and relatively inexpensive way to cover the windows.

Don’t forget that gap between the doors and the floor. Get double sided door guards that slide onto the bottom of the doors. You can still open and close the doors all you want. Brrr, stop opening that door!

It’s fun to go out in the snow, but when you come inside you want some cozy warmth. And if you plan ahead you can actually have it, even in the chill of the northern climes.

Few things are more intimidating than looking into the rear view mirror and seeing the red and blue lights of a police vehicle. The heart races and the mouth resembles cotton. When all is said and done, you are staring at a traffic ticket.

Traffic tickets are not automatic admissions of guilt. This is quoted by police officers, and it holds true. A traffic ticket is merely the observation of a police officer related to an alleged moving violation. Some observations are very clear. Some observations are not. Regardless of clarity, everyone has the right of due process. The judicial system provides a forum for which individuals can dispute officer claims. Therefore, a successful court date can eliminate fines, points or remedial training associated with the offense. Red Light Tickets are ones that are commonly looked at.

If the ticket was received for speeding, vehicle speed calibrations should be taken if speedometer inaccuracies are suspected. Proof of inaccurate calibrations should be documented on service receipts along with the date of service. Brakes can be checked for stop sign violations. The same documentation applies.

It is very important to remember as many details prior to the vehicle stop and during the vehicle stop. Photos are very important and can prove vital for turn violations, stop sign violations as well as speed violations. Some areas are known as speed traps and may include hills that would almost necessitate more vehicle momentum. Some stop signs may not be clearly marked or partially obscured by shrubbery, light posts and other things that hinder visibility. At times, turn signs can confuse. This is often seen in construction zones. Photos and documentation may prove vital to having a ticket dismissed. Therefore, notes should be taken immediately after the citation has been received. Note the time of day, traffic conditions and pedestrian traffic in the area. The sun can obscure vision. Vehicle and pedestrian traffic may necessitate evasive maneuvers to avoid collisions.

Failing to show for traffic court assumes guilt. Therefore, it is good to attend traffic court. If the issuing officer does not show to defend the citation, it is automatically dismissed! If improper documentation was cited on the ticket, it will be dismissed. However, individuals who know they are guilty of the stated violation should consider operating with character and integrity. Police officers are very experienced and know documentation necessary to defend citations. Therefore, it is wise to accept options to attend traffic school or similar remedial training in lieu of points against a driver’s license.

Attitude is very important. Judges are not easily intimidated or impressed by a bad attitude. Bad attitudes are an affront and a sign of disrespect to the courtroom. However; a firm, confident but humble demeanor goes a long way.

There’s a lot more to this topic than modern-day laws about smoking indoors, though that does seem the most obvious difference between the AMC hit show and real life human resources departments. But in the five decades since the time setting for Mad Men, women’s liberation, the Fair Labor Standards Act, and other societal revolutions have made a modern revolution of a Mad Men work environment fundamentally impossible. Here’s why:

1) Women’s lib was in full swing in the 1970s when sexual harassment and discrimination that occurred within the walls of corporations began to become noticed and punishable. When The Grindstone asked HR Expert Nicole Stragalas of Stradvarius Solutions to pinpoint 10 “flaws” in the premier episode of Mad Men Season 5, four of them were related to gender bias and eight involve the presence of women in the workplace. These are sexually-based conversation, suggestive comments regarding dress, and the like.

2) Another major development in the ’70s was the heightening of racial tensions, in and out of the workforce. This called for more stringent legislation by human resource personnel and the department’s authority and specialized training. Personnel managers became the mediators of payroll disputes and the consultants of department managers, advising them against actions that could land them in industrial tribunals. Industrial relations were rapidly changing, too fast for companies riding the industrial revolution to keep up with so HR became the go-to for discrimination incidents.

3) Besides a cigarette and a toned up sense of fashion, what is the next most-obvious difference in accessories? A cellphone, smart phone, PDA, etc. The tech revolution was decades beyond the age of Mad Men, and has, consequently, changed the face of internal operations, including the human resources end. Applications to jobs are uploaded to company websites, as are payroll information and development training. Additionally, HR departments were revolutionized with software used for keeping employment data and accomplishing routine tasks.

4) Of course there are differences in finances due to general inflation. But the way those finances trickle down to a company’s employees has shifted significantly as well. The Fair Labor Standards Act was first enacted in 1938, attempting to even wages. In the ’60s, wage negotiations centered on age and sex and in the ’80s attention shifted to migrant workers. Since then, the classification between exempt employees and non-exempt employees has been disputed numerous times. Some of the most recent changes (the 2004 and 2007 revisions) would have paid many of the employees of Sterling Cooper for any hours they worked over 40 hours, but their managers would have been exempt.

5) The FLSA has also forced companies to uphold a standard of fairness in terms of humane treatment outside the bounds of pay. In the 21st century, employees are entitled to break time and lunch. The most recent amendment to the FLSA allows breaks and private areas to “express milk” for nursing mothers. Comfort has become a legal right. Just make sure you smoke outside.

It’s not a Mad Men world anymore. Maybe that’s why the show is so popular and has garnered a large following. Those who have earned a human resources degree and work in the HR department of a business have it a bit easier now with all the changes in fairness and technology.
